Opening Reception at Stockholm City Hall
The reception, which is generously hosted by Stockholm City, starts on Tuesday, August 29, at 18.00. We start at 17.00 with a sightseeing cruise on the water ways of Stockholm, through the Old Town to the City Hall (box C on the map below). The tour starts outside the conference hotel, Grand Hôtel. Walking distance time is about 15-20 minutes from the hotel to the City Hall. The Stockholm City Hall was designed by the architect Ragnar Östberg in 1923. The building is beautifully situated on the Riddarfjärden waterfront in central Stockholm and hosts the central administration of the city. However, it is most famous for the Nobel Prize festivities, which take place in the Blue Hall every year on December 10. During this SIGCOMM reception there will be a standing buffet reception where you will get the opportunity to try all the deliciousness of a traditional Swedish "smörgåsbord". Included in registration fee for delegates & accompanying persons. Pre-reservations necessary.

SIGCOMM Award
The SIGCOMM Award is given annually to a person whose career and technical achievements demonstrate a long-term commitment to the field of data commu-nications. ACM SIGCOMM is pleased to announce that the 2000 SIGCOMM Award is being given to Prof. André Danthine of the University of Liege, Belgium. Prof. Danthine will receive the award and give the conference keynote address in the opening session on Wednesday.

Outrageous Opinions Session
Nothing is so permanent as a temporary addition. The Outrageous Opinions Session provides true prognostigatory enrichment to SIGCOMM. In a supportive, interactive atmosphere, ideas and suggestions in their early stages can be shared with the SIGCOMM community. Past years have included Loud Gongs, dunking in the Mediterranean, and an international tribunal of judges. Submissions to this session are actively solicited, and will be accepted by the OO Chair Gary Delp
gdelp@acm.org beginning the week before the conference.

Student Poster Session - Work in Progress
Work in progress will be presented during a one hour poster session. Poster proposals should be sent to the PC chairs (
sigcomm2000-pcchairs@cs.umass.edu) by July 12. Details on how to submit a poster may be found here. The main author of the poster must be a student. Posters will be reviewed by members of the SIGCOMM Technical Program Committee and accepted posters will be notified in early August.

Dinner at the Vasa Museum
The Thursday evening will begin with a guided tour of one of the most remarkable and awe-inspiring historical sights in the world - the Warship Vasa. The Vasa was Sweden's largest and most prestigious warship - the pride of the naval fleet and the Swedish nation. Her glory was short-lived. Shortly after having set sail on her maiden voyage in 1628 she sank within Stockholm harbour. She spent the next 333 years lying on the bot-tom of the sea until she was finally located and raised from the water. The ship was found to be incredibly well preserved. Apainstaking operation to protect her from further damage has resulted in her taking pride of place in her own museum. After the tour, guests are invited to a seated dinner by the ship (box W on the map below). Included in registration fee for delegates. Price: SEK 675 for accompanying persons. Pre-reservations necessary for all.
